FAQ: Clay court men’s Challenger tournament, Campinas. The interpretation of the bet is that Meza wins with at least a 4-game difference. For example: 6-4, 6-4.
Reasoning: Matias Soto (263rd in the world rankings) last week in Chile went quite far (semi-final, final) in both singles and doubles, so he played quite a few matches. Then he travelled to Brazil and also entered both categories, so he continues to be exposed to extra workload daily. Furthermore, in singles, he had to go to the deciding set and tie-break in his last 2 matches, so he spent a lot of time on the court. Because of all these, he is increasingly tired, the result of which was evidenced at dawn: they eventually dropped out after a super tie-break in doubles. He is obviously completely exhausted physically now, so it wouldn’t surprise me if this competition would end for him this afternoon. Playing several matches a day is extremely difficult, especially at this level… Considering that he is not a big star, as he has never been in the top 240 even at the age of 25! In contrast, Alvaro Guillen Meza (243rd currently, his best is 215th) only participated in singles here in Campinas, and achieved relatively easy victories in the previous rounds. He has a better season record (15 W – 8 L vs. 8 W – 8 L) in this category, he is younger and possibly more talented too. As proved by the result of their only previous match against each other (6-1, 6-3). I expect the Chilean to deflate today. Meza anyway has to defend more world ranking points from last year’s semi-final here. Hence, he will be more motivated.
Final score: 6-1, 6-2 => the bet WON! 🙂
